What Is Leqembi?

Leqembi® (lecanemab-irmb) is an FDA-approved anti-amyloid monoclonal antibody indicated for the treatment of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease, confirmed by amyloid pathology.

Leqembi targets and removes beta-amyloid plaques in the brain—thought to be one of the key drivers of Alzheimer’s progression. Clinical trials have shown it can slow cognitive and functional decline when used early in the disease.

Leqembi is administered via IV infusion every 2 weeks and requires ongoing MRI monitoring due to potential brain-related side effects.

Who Is Eligible for Leqembi?

Leqembi is appropriate for patients who:

• Are diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease (MCI or mild dementia)
• Have confirmed amyloid pathology through PET scan or CSF testing
• Can undergo regular brain MRI monitoring
• Have a support system in place for follow-up care and adherence

Eligibility requires a neurologist or dementia specialist to assess cognitive stage and confirm biomarker positivity.

Leqembi Side Effects

Leqembi may cause amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), a class of side effects involving brain swelling or microhemorrhages seen on MRI. Most ARIA cases are asymptomatic but require close monitoring.

Other side effects may include:

• Headache
• Infusion-related reactions (fever, chills, nausea)
• Dizziness
• Flu-like symptoms
