What Is Feraheme?
Feraheme® (ferumoxytol) is an FDA-approved intravenous iron replacement therapy used to treat iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in adult patients, particularly those with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or who are unable to use oral iron supplements.
Feraheme is typically administered as a quick IV infusion, often completed in under 20 minutes, and may require only two doses, spaced 3 to 8 days apart.
Conditions Treated with Feraheme
Feraheme is indicated for the treatment of:
- Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) in adult patients with:
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
- Inadequate response to oral iron
- Intolerance to oral iron therapies
Feraheme replenishes iron stores in the body, helping restore hemoglobin levels and reduce symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
Feraheme Side Effects
Feraheme is generally well tolerated, but as with any IV medication, side effects may occur.
Common side effects:
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Flushing
- Injection site discomfort
Less common but serious risks include allergic or hypotensive (low blood pressure) reactions. All patients are monitored during and after the infusion. For a complete list of side effects, visit the Feraheme website and review the full prescribing information.
For a full list of potential side effects, please see the Important Safety Information and Medication Guide on the Feraheme Website.
